The body of Farah Noor Adams, 34, was discovered by workmen on the banks of the river on Friday morning. It is thought that Ms Adams, who was of Pakistani origin, had gone power-walking on the Kelvin walkway shortly after she had dropped her eight- year-old daughter off at primary school.

Police have stepped up security in the Maryhill area of the city after the killing. Officers have conducted door-to-door inquiries but have received little response so far.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Watters, in charge of the investigation, said: "We have received a disappointing response from members of the public since our appeal. We have still have not received any further sightings of Farah after she dropped her daughter off at school.

"I am reiterating my appeal to anyone who saw Farah between the hours of 8.45am and 10.45am on Friday. This attack occurred during broad daylight and the area from Farah's home to the Kelvin walkway would have been relatively busy with people going to work. Understandably, the family are distraught by this devastating news. We are doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time."

A police cordon remains at the scene as forensic tests continue, with officers from support services carrying out a fingertip search.

Ms Adams, who worked with the Citizens Advice Bureau and also as a volunteer, was described as being of Asian appearance, petite and with long black hair. She was found wearing a red cotton zip top, blue jeans, dark blue trainers and a baseball cap.

Strathclyde Police officers are maintaining a strong presence in the area of the river and canal system where Ms Adams' body was found, to gather information and reassure the public. Superintendent Peter McLaughlin said yesterday: "Farah's body was discovered more than 48 hours ago and understandably the local community is deeply shocked by this tragic killing."
