Police are searching for a gang of youths involved in a vicious race attack that has left two Asian men "serious but stable" in hospital.

The men were attacked on Friday night as they were walking along Chaseley Road, Salford. Up to 10 white youths shouted racist abuse as they beat the two men, aged 24 and 30, with sticks.

The 30-year-old is being treated for head injuries. The 24-year-old is being treated for a fractured cheekbone. Doctors believe he will need surgery to rebuild his face.

"At this stage we are treating this sickening attack as an entirely unprovoked and racially aggravated assault," said Detective Inspector Jill Clarke of Greater Manchester Police. "It seems the two men were walking along the road, minding their own business, when they were approached by this group of youths."

Extra police officers have been drafted in to join the search for the gang. Today marks the first anniversary of the death of 18-year-old student Anthony Walker, who died from his injuries after being the victim of a racially motivated assault.
