Police hunt killer of fan attacked in Burnley bar
Police have launched a murder inquiry following the death of a teenage football fan yesterday who was attacked two hours before a First Division match.
The 17-year-old victim was assaulted in a bar in Burnley on Saturday. It is thought he was hit on the head by a bottle.
The Nottingham Forest fan is believed to have travelled to the town in the North-west for the match against Burnley. Police are investigating whether the attack was linked to the match.
The unnamed teenager, from Nottingham, was attacked at 1pm. He died at the Royal Preston Hospital at about 10.30am yesterday with his family at his bedside.
Lancashire Police said they were following "firm lines of inquiry" into the attack.
A Burnley FC spokesman said: "Following the tragic incident in Burnley town centre which resulted in the death of a Nottingham Forest supporter, Burnley FC would like to express sincere sympathies to his family and friends, Nottingham Forest Football Club and all its supporters. Burnley FC will fully support the police investigating team the inquiry and will continue to work closely with the police to eradicate football violence."
