Police were today hunting the occupants of a van which knocked down and killed a 10-year-old boy.

The youngster was hit by a blue Ford Transit as he was crossing the road near Holgate Bridge in York, known locally as "the Iron Bridge", at about 8.20pm yesterday.

North Yorkshire Police said the van stopped after hitting the youngster but the occupants then ran off, leaving the van behind.

The occupants are described as white males in their late teens or early 20s. It is unclear how people were in the vehicle.

The boy was seriously injured and treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to York District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

North Yorkshire Police have not issued the identity of the boy but say his family have been informed.

Witnesses or anyone with any information are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7.
