A man has been charged with attempting to obtain a chemical weapon, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Mohammed Ammer Ali, 31, of Prescot Road, Liverpool, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' court tomorrow.

The charge followed an investigation by the by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit and Merseyside Police, GMP said tonight.

Ali is accused of attempting to have a chemical weapon in his possession between January 10 and February 12.

Police arrested him as officers searched five addresses in Merseyside on Wednesday, and a number of items were seized.

A GMP spokesman said it remained the case that at this time officers had uncovered no plan or threat of an imminent attack either at home or abroad.
