Saturday 24 July 2010 19:00 EDT

A murder investigation was launched after a man was stabbed to death in an apparently targeted attack, police said.

Thirty-seven-year-old Martin Gallagher suffered stab wounds to the chest in Gorton, Greater Manchester, on Friday. Police were called to the scene following reports of a disturbance. The man was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he later died. Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Mr Gallagher's family paid tribute to him, saying he was "everybody's friend, a great character and young at heart".
