A retired bus driver was knocked down and killed by thieves as they stole his car.

Ken Bostock, 67, who was married with three daughters and a son, was parking his Volkswagen Golf in his garage in Sefton, Merseyside, on Wednesday night when two men jumped in. As they drove away, Mr Bostock tried to stop them but they ran him down. He was taken to Aintree Hospital, but died of his injuries. The car was found burnt out in the nearby Netherton area.

Neighbours described Mr Bostock as a quiet and friendly man. One said: "His car was obviously his pride and joy. It was always gleaming and there was never a speck of dirt on it. It's really sad what's happened."

Detective Chief Inspector Bob Marsden, of Merseyside Police, said he believed the culprits came from the local area. Neighbours said gangs of youths sometimes caused a nuisance and cars had been broken into before.
