The grandfather of a baby mauled to death by Rottweilers was stabbed and his partner killed in a separate attack hours later, a family member said today.

John Brightwell, 50, and Debra Larn, 47, were attacked at their home in Beaumont Leys, Leicester, in the early hours of yesterday morning, said his niece, 17-year-old Natalie Brightwell.

Leicestershire Police said a 26-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman had been arrested in connection with the stabbing attack in Beaumont Leys.

At around 4pm on Saturday, his five-month-old granddaughter Caydee-Lee was savaged by guard dogs at The Rocket public house in the New Parks area of the city.

Police believe the two incidents are unconnected. "We are not linking the crimes, they are being treated as separate incidents," said a Leicestershire Constabulary spokeswoman.

Miss Brightwell said her uncle is the father of Ryan, Caydee-Lee's father.

"Two tragedies in a few days - it's left us distraught," she said.
