Baby's body found on footpath in Oxfordshire village

The body of a baby has been found in a black bag on a footpath in Marston, Oxfordshire.

The dead child was spotted by a member of the public near Edgeway Road.

Police have appealed for the mother to come forward, saying she may be in need of urgent medical attention.

Officers were called to the scene at 9.20am and are carrying out patrols in the area.

Detective Inspector Jim Holmes, of Thames Valley Police, said: “This investigation is in its very early stages and officers are working to trace the mother of the child as she may require urgent medical attention.

“If you are the mother of the baby, please come forward so that we can ensure any appropriate help needed can be provided.

“Likewise if you are a friend or family member of the mother, please come forward so we can check on her welfare.

“The death is being treated as unexplained at this time.”

South Central Ambulance Service said it was called to reports the child had been found in a black bag in the bushes along the side of the road.

The baby was declared dead at the scene.

The sex and age of the baby have not yet been revealed.
