A nurse who filmed himself raping unconscious patients in A&E has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Andrew Hutchinson, 29, carried out assaults on two women aged 18 and 35 after they were brought into the John Radicliffe hospital in Oxford, where he worked.

Hutchinson also recorded himself sexually assaulting two other unconscious women while he was volunteering in the medical tent of a music festival.

His crimes were discovered when he was arrested for voyeurism after being caught filming girls as young as nine at a leisure centre in Oxfordshire.

Police found indecent images on seized devices which included a mobile phone, computer equipment, a memory stick and a camera.

His victims were unaware of what he had done until they were traced by detectives. Since his arrest Hutchinson did not work for and is no longer an employee of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The court heard that it had been impossible to trace hundreds of other women who had voyeuristic photos, including upskirt shots, taken of them on the London Underground while Hutchinson was working as a volunteer at the 2012 Olympics.

Hutchinson pleaded guilty to 27 counts including rape, voyeurism, sexual assault, making indecent images of children, and theft.

Senior Investigating Officer Mark Johns of Thames Valley Police, CID, said: "I am pleased that Hutchinson has been sentenced for this string of depraved offences across Oxfordshire.

"I have no doubt that Hutchinson would have continued to offend had he not been arrested so I am delighted that this prolific offender will now be behind bars for a significant period of his life.

"This has been a particularly complicated, unusual and sensitive case. I would like to thank the victims for the great courage and dignity they have shown during our investigation."

Adrian Foster, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), added: "This case involved a sustained and prolonged course of sexual offending against a number of girls and women.

"Andrew Hutchinson abused his position of trust and took advantage of his circumstances to prey on his victims for his own sexual gratification."

"The emotional impact on the victims and their families of the abhorrent actions of this man is impossible to quantify. I hope that the conviction and today’s sentence gives some small comfort to them. Our thoughts are very much with them all at this time."
