A registered nurse appeared in court today charged with the murders of three elderly residents at the care home she ran with her husband.

Rachel Baker, 43, who operated Parkfields Residential Care Home, in Butleigh, Somerset, allegedly murdered three women as a result of a dependency on prescription drugs, Yeovil Magistrates' Court heard.

It is alleged she murdered Marion Alder, 79, Clara "Lucy" Cox, 97, and Mary "Francis" Hay, 85, between 2006 and 2007.

Baker also faces 11 counts of possession of controlled class A and C drugs.

She and her husband Leigh Baker, 50, who appeared alongside her today, are jointly charged with a single count of perverting the course of justice.

The couple, from Glastonbury, Somerset, who spoke only to confirm their names, were both granted conditional bail, and will next appear at Bristol Crown Court on 6 February.
