*The 13-month-old son of two police officers was shaken so violently by his nanny that he suffered brain damage and died 10 months later, a court was told.

Isaac Rowlinson was taken to hospital while being cared for by Linda Wise, 47, as his parents enjoyed a weekend break. Paul and Lisa Rowlinson, both detectives with Lancashire police, returned from the Lake District to find their child in a coma in hospital, with bleeding on his brain.

Isaac, who had had feeding problems since birth, spent three weeks in intensive care but survived the alleged assault and was discharged.

But he died last July after an epileptic fit triggered by his earlier injuries, it was claimed. Nick Johnson, QC, for the prosecution, said: "That is why, we say, Linda Wise is criminally responsible for Isaac's death." Ms Wise, of Conwy, North Wales, denies manslaughter. The trial continues at Liverpool Crown Court.
