Two men were taken to hospital today after jumping out of a window during a raid by immigration officials.

UK Border Agency staff supported by police searched a home in Balham High Road, south London, shortly after 6am.

As the raid unfolded two men jumped out of a window on to the roof of a three-storey building, leaving them with minor injuries.

Firefighters were called in to get the men off the roof and the busy commuter road was shut for more than an hour.

Three Pakistani nationals were arrested, two on suspicion of overstaying their visas and one on suspicion of illegally entering Britain.

A UK Border Agency spokeswoman said: "During a UK Border Agency enforcement operation on Balham High Road this morning two individuals attempted to escape and suffered minor injuries.

"Emergency services arrived at the scene, both have been taken to hospital."

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: "Two fire engines and a fire rescue unit attended an incident involving two people on a roof of a building on Balham High Road, earlier today.

"Two men were rescued from the roof of a three-storey building by firefighters using a ladder and were treated by the London Ambulance Service."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the two patients were taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting.
