One firm has even appointed "lifestyle" professionals to advise solicitors on how to get through the daily grind. The findings, published in the Law Society Gazette, show that firms are offering alternative therapies including feng shui, acupressure massage, lessons in breathing, and art classes. "Dress-down Friday" policies are now operated by eight out of 10 firms, the survey found.
The willingness of big firms to do as much as they can to alleviate stress at work is motivated by the increasing number of lawyers who are reporting drug and alcohol addictions brought on by pressure of work.
Figures from the lawyers' counselling service, Solcare, shows that all the partners seeking help with alcoholism were men and three quarters of assistant solicitors who complained of depression and stress were women.
