Man shot dead on Cheshire street

A man has died after being shot in the street.

Officers were alerted after residents in Hale, Cheshire, heard gunfire shortly after midnight.

The 30-year-old victim, from nearby Widnes, was found on Pepper Street with serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he later died.

His next of kin have been informed.

The scene remains sealed off for forensic examinations and Cheshire Police have increased patrols of the area to provide reassurance to residents.

Chief Superintendent Richard Strachan said: "Incidents such as this are rare not just in Widnes, but in Cheshire as a whole.

"Our priority is the safety of our community and we are doing all we can to explore the circumstances surrounding this shooting and identify those responsible.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the deceased."
