A man accused of murdering a 62-year-old disabled man was remanded in police custody by magistrates today, a police spokeswoman said.

Ricky Gelardo, 28, is charged with the murder of wheelchair-user Alan Atkin, who was found beaten to death in his flat on Swan Hill Road, Scarborough, on Wednesday afternoon.

Gelardo was charged with Mr Atkin's murder last night and appeared before Scarborough Magistrates' Court this morning, a spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said.

Mr Atkin's body was discovered by two female friends at about 3.15pm.

He had suffered severe injuries to his face, head and body and a post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death was due to the head injuries.

Gelardo was remanded in police custody and will appear before Leeds Crown Court on Thursday.
