A 56-year-old man died after he was hit by a car while he was lying in the road.

The driver of the unknown vehicle failed to stop following the collision in Cooperative Street, Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire, at 8.25pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the local man was "believed to have been lying in the carriageway" before the incident.

The vehicle, which failed to stop, was seen to turn off Cooperative Street into Doncaster Road.

Anyone who saw the collision, the moments leading up to it, or who knew the driver should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 779.
