A man who kidnapped and raped a 17-year-old girl almost 24 years ago was today given a life sentence.

Donald William Robertson, 55, was told he will serve a minimum of eight years after new forensic evidence came to light in a cold case review of the 1987 crime, Thames Valley Police said.

Robertson, formerly from Slough in Berkshire, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court after he was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of kidnap following a six-day trial in December.

He approached his teenage victim in June 1987 as she walked along Bath Road, Slough, in the early hours of the morning but she managed to run and hide. The victim, now 41, believed he had a gun or a knife in his pocket.

After running off, the teenager tried to escape by flagging down a passing car but Robertson caught up with her and forced her into his vehicle before driving off and parking up at a trading estate where he raped her.

Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Review Team (MCRT) re-examined the case, which led to the discovery of the new forensic evidence.
