A man who infected two women with HIV after having unprotected sex with them despite knowing he was a carrier has been jailed for seven years.

Mweetwa Muleya, 28, from Swansea, knew from the age of 19 that he had HIV and had been warned it would be a crime to have sex without warning a partner he had tested positive.

Both the women, Swansea Crown Court was told, were “devastated” when they discovered Muleya had passed on the condition. One of them, known only as Miss B, said it had destroyed her life.

Judge Huw Davies QC told him: "You were selfish to a degree which beggars description. You deceived, quite deliberately, one person after another in ways that damaged their lives with lasting consequences. The harm to these victims was of the worst kind."

Muleya came to Britain from Zambia as a teenager and was given, along with anti-retroviral medication to help control the condition, advice on how to avoid infecting other people.
