A man found wandering beside a dual carriageway after having his penis cut off has come out of a coma and is conscious, police have said.

Officers visited the 40-year-old in hospital today after he came out of an induced coma, but were unable to interview him to determine how he sustained such serious injuries.

It is understood that this is because of the strong painkillers he has been given.

The man was found in a distressed state with "wounds to his groin area" by the A66 in Middlesbrough. The A66 Westbound from Greystone Roundabout to Church Lane was shut yesterday morning while officers searched for evidence.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "The man who was found early yesterday morning on the A66 near South Bank with serious injuries to his groin area remains in hospital and is now conscious.

"Officers have visited him in hospital this morning but were unable to carry out a detailed interview.

"They hope to speak to him later today or tomorrow in a bid to establish exactly how he came by his injuries.

"Inquiries are ongoing and police would welcome any information which could help with their investigation. Please contact Cleveland Police on 101."

A 22-year-old man was held by police for questioning on suspicion of assault and was later bailed pending further inquiries.
