Police are investigating two deaths that happened within 90 minutes of each other and only one street apart on the same day a teenager was fatally stabbed.

A woman was knifed repeatedly in Valentines Road, Ilford, east London, at 5.30pm on Friday. She was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, according to Scotland Yard.

Officers were called again to nearby Auckland Road shortly after 7pm where a man was found lying in the street. He died soon after arriving at hospital.

Both victims were in their 20s and knew each other, according to police, though they were not related. Formal identifications have yet to take place.

Detectives said there was no evidence to suggest the man’s death was suspicious but launched a murder investigation into the death of the woman.

In a statement, the Met said both cases were being investigated by officers from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, adding: “The death of the woman, who had suffered multiple stab wounds, is being treated as murder.

“At this early stage, there is no evidence to suggest that the death of the man is suspicious. Enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances.”

Post-mortem investigations are still to take place while police enquiries continue.

Also on Friday, a teenager was stabbed to death outside a convenience store in Pilgrimage Street, Borough, south London. Police were called shortly before 2.30pm.

Justice Minister and Liberal Democrat MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Simon Hughes, appealed for calm in the wake of what he described as an “awful tragedy”.

A witness, who did not want to be named, told the Press Association that the teenager was with a friend and his aunt when he was attacked. No arrests have been made as enquiries continue.

Anyone with information about either incident should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
