A man who made dozens of nuisance phone calls to dentist surgeries and nursery schools has escaped prison, the Crown Prosecution Service said today.

David Cox, 55, from Lowerstack Croft, Birmingham, was handed a 16-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, a spokeswoman for the CPS confirmed.

He was also ordered to take part in a community sex offenders' course and pay £150 towards the court's costs.

At Northampton Magistrates' Court yesterday, Cox admitted one charge of making "offensive, indecent or menacing" phone calls between September and December last year.
