A 40-year-old man has been charged with murder after a nurse was stabbed to death at a hospital in Croydon.

Jimmy Jedson, from South Croydon, is accused of killing Patrick Clarke at Southleigh Community Hospital on Thursday.

Police were called to reports of an attack at the hospital in Brighton Road, which provides treatment and rehabilitation for adults with long-term mental health problems.

Mr Clarke, 68, from Caterham in Surrey, was found with a series of knife wounds after being attacked at the private medical facility. He died at the scene from his injuries.

Mr Jedson, who is reported to be an inpatient, was arrested and charged on suspicion of murder before being treated for a hand injury from the attack.

A spokesman for the hospital said at the time: “We are greatly saddened to confirm that a member of staff lost his life following an incident in the hospital.

”Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues. He was a valued and respected member of staff who will be deeply missed.“

Mr Jedson is due to appear in custody at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Monday.
