Man charged over Carr papers theft

Police charged a 33-year-old man last night with the theft of documents detailing the release plans for Maxine Carr, the former girlfriend of the Soham murderer, Ian Huntley.
Darren Jacobs, unemployed and of no fixed abode, will remain in custody at a north London police station until tomorrow, when he appears at Highbury Magistrates Court in London.
The highly sensitive papers were stolen on Tuesday from the car of a Home Office official and later found dumped on Hampstead Heath. It is understood that the documents included details of Carr's new name and phone number, and the address of a safe house where she was expected to be held after her release from prison on Friday.
The Metropolitan police said most of the items had been found, although a few personal possessions taken from the car were still missing.
This weekend, Carr, 27, is enjoying her first days of freedom, having served half of a 42-month sentence for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, although she is still under the supervision of a probation officer.
The former classroom assistant was jailed after providing a false alibi for her then fiancé, Ian Huntley, who received a life sentence for murdering 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire.
Last week, her solicitors obtained an order banning the media from publishing any details about her new life that could lead to her new identity being revealed.
