Man arrested over murder of disabled man in his home
detectives yesterday arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 62-year-old disabled man who was beaten to death in his home.
The 28-year-old was held at his home address in Scarborough by police investigating the death of Alan Atkin.
Mr Atkin was found dead in his flat in Scarborough last Wednesday afternoon.
He had suffered severe injuries to his face, head and body and a post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death was from his head injuries.
Mr Atkin was well known in the town as he socialised regularly and used a wheelchair to get around.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police have today arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with Mr Atkin's death.
"The man, who lives in Scarborough, was arrested at his home address yesterday and is currently in police custody where he will be interviewed by detectives."
Mr Atkin's body was discovered by two female friends at about 3.15pm last Wednesday.
Extensive inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries and a police search team is scouring the nearby area for clues.
Police believe Mr Atkin's circle of friends could play a crucial role in helping to identify a suspect as there was no sign of forced entry into his flat.
"Police would still like to hear from anyone who knew Mr Atkin, particularly anyone who saw him or saw any suspicious activity between 16 April and 21 April," the spokeswoman added.
