A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was stabbed outside a primary school in Merseyside.

Police officers launched a manhunt after being called to Devonshire Park primary school in Birkenhead following reports the woman had been assaulted as she walked back to her car.

The school was evacuated as police launched their search.

The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries to her hand, which are not believed to be life threatening.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "The man is in custody and will be questioned by detectives today.

"Merseyside Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

Earlier, police said they thought the attacker was known to the victim and the assault may be domestic related.

A police helicopter circled directly over the school as officers conducted house-to-house enquiries and checked CCTV.

Devonshire Park primary school remained closed until further notice.
