Police have arrested a 31-year-old man after two sex assaults were allegedly carried out on women while they were in the presence of their young children.

Greater Manchester Police described the incidents as “horrific”.

Police said they received a report shortly after 4:40am this morning of the attempted rape of a 24 year old woman, who was sleeping in bed with her young son at her home in Newton Heath, Manchester.

The victim’s partner disturbed the man and he fled the house.

At around 7am police received a further report that a 33-year-old woman had been raped and assaulted in her home in Failsworth, Greater Manchester. The woman was with her baby at the time.

The woman is currently in hospital being treated for serious injuries, but the child is unharmed.

Detective Inspector Chris Flint of North Manchester division said: “I would like to thank the local community for the support they have provided during this investigation.

“Officers made an arrest this afternoon in Manchester city centre and he remains in police custody for questioning.”

At a press conference earlier today Deputy Inspector Flint said that the two victims are traumatised and specially trained officers are supporting the women and their families during this time.

He added that there will be extra patrols in the areas of the attacks to support the community.
