A man was in custody today suspected of murdering a 12-year-old girl found stabbed to death at a house.

The victim was discovered yesterday afternoon after police were called to a house in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody for questioning, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

A post-mortem examination has not yet taken place and the girl has not been formally identified.

Chief Superintendent John O'Hare said: "This is a shocking incident which has had a dramatic effect on the family and will no doubt cause concern in the local community.

"The investigation is at an early stage and an arrest has been made.

"We're not looking for anyone else in this matter."

The girl was found in the property in Dalmain Close at around 3.45pm.

It was cordoned off by police last night, with forensic officers going in and out of the property.
