A man was in custody today after a home was set on fire.

The 32-year-old was rescued by firefighters after being trapped on the roof of the building, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

Emergency services were called to the flat in Dowell Close, Taunton, following a number of reports of the blaze at 4pm yesterday.

Police said neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution while fire crews brought the blaze under control.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "A 32-year-old male has been arrested in relation to the incident.

"Police and fire services are jointly investigating."

The fire service said three crews attended the flat but on arrival a further crew from Wellington was requested.

"Fire control received multiple calls for a flat on fire in Taunton," a spokesman said.

"Three fire appliances were mobilised from Taunton due to the information received.

"On arrival crews requested a further appliance, and one from Wellington was mobilised along with the incident command unit from Wiveliscombe.

"One person was trapped on the roof of the building. Crews rescued the man, and got to work with two hose reel jets, one covering jet and one main jet with four breathing apparatus wearers.

"All persons were accounted for, and police and fire investigation were also requested to attend."

After about an hour those evacuated were able to return to their homes.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
