An 18-year-old man has died after being shot in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police said armed officers and the ambulance service were called after the injured teenager was found on Tagus Road, at the rear of Lodge Lane, Toxteth, at about 8.30pm on Friday.

He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Chief Inspector Keith McLachlan said: "Our investigation is in its early stages but I would urge anyone who saw the incident or anyone acting suspiciously in the area just before 8.30pm to contact us immediately.

"Any information may be vital to finding those responsible and bringing them to justice. We are relentless in pursuing those who choose to bring firearms onto the streets of Merseyside. I am sure local people will be appalled that this has taken place in daylight hours.

"Information from the community will always be acted on, so help us remove those responsible and their weapons from the streets."

Police said the teenager's family has been informed and a postmortem examination was due to take place.

The incident follows two gun attacks in Merseyside earlier this week in Fazakerley, where a 43-year-old man was shot in the chest, and Seaforth, where a 27-year-old man was shot in the arms and leg. Both attacks happened within 25 minutes of each other on Thursday.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
