Firearms officers shot a man dead in a Kent village yesterday after reports that he was armed with a gun.
Police shot and fatally injured the man just before 8am in Stansted, near Sevenoaks, after two unarmed officers had initially attended the scene.
Villagers said many people among the large local farming community hold shotgun licences and thought the shooting could have been an accident. But there were also suggestions that the man was not local and that police had been "acting on intelligence received". The incident was not believed to have been domestic.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) immediately launched its own investigation into the killing.
A spokesman said: "There has been a rumour that this was just someone out shooting rabbits in fields, but that was not the case. This took place in a street in the village."
The IPCC added that a weapon had been recovered. A white Mitsubishi car was towed away from the scene of the shooting.
