Judges throw out Sheridan appeal

Tommy Sheridan, the former MSP who was found guilty of perjury last year, has been denied permission to appeal against his conviction.

He is serving a three-year prison sentence for lying while under oath during his libel case against the News of the World, which claimed he was adulterous and had visited a swingers club. He was found to have lied about his private life during the legal action, which originally resulted in him receiving £200,000 in damages from the newspaper.

Sheridan argued that the phone-hacking scandal had raised doubts over testimony from the former NOTW editor Andy Coulson. But a leaked court document has revealed that a panel of three appeal judges have ruled that his case is "not arguable".
