Detectives launch murder investigation after ‘serious assault’ on pensioner
Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man in his seventies died following a serious assault on the Isle of Wight .
Officers were called to an area of woodland in the village of Lake on Monday afternoon.
They found the fatally injured pensioner, who died shortly afterwards at the scene.
The victim is yet to be formally identified.
A man in his sixties has been arrested on suspicion of murder, detectives said.
“We received a report earlier this afternoon that a man believed to be in his 70s had been seriously assaulted,” a Hampshire Police spokesperson said.
“Officers located this man in an area of woodland in the Lake area and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is being treated as murder and we have arrested a 60-year-old man from Sandown on suspicion of murder.”
The suspect remains in police custody.
”Investigations into the circumstances surrounding this death are in the very early stages at the moment,” Detective Chief Inspector Justin Torgout added.
“We currently have someone in custody and are keen to establish the exact circumstances of this man’s death so if you have any information that could assist us then please call us on 101.”
