High security as jewel heist accused in court

Two men appeared in court yesterday over the £40m jewellery heist and a third man was charged with conspiracy to rob. Solomun Beyene, 24, and Craig Calderwood, 26, were remanded in custody after a brief hearing at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court.
The pair are accused of undertaking the robbery at Graff jewellers in New Bond Street store, Mayfair, central London, on 6 August. They are also charged with possessing handguns.
The two men appeared in the dock flanked by five prison officers amid heightened security. Mr Beyene, of St John's Wood, north London, and Calderwood, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and dates of birth.
Presiding magistrate Anne Packer remanded them in custody and ordered them to appear at Kingston Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on 1 September.
A third man, Clinton Mogg, 42, of Bournemouth, was charged with conspiracy to rob, Scotland Yard said. A Scotland Yard spokesman said he would appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court today. A 50-year-old man who was held last week in Ilford, east London, has been released on bail pending inquiries. Speaking after the hearing, defence solicitor Antonie Xavier, who represents Mr Beyene, said his client denies any involvement in the robbery.
