A father was stabbed to death 15 minutes after leaving his girlfriend and newborn baby to go to work.

The 24-year-old man was found injured inside a VW Polo after it collided with another car in Hendon, northwest London, on Saturday night.

He died in hospital the same evening and the Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation.

Detectives believe the victim was attacked in a nearby car park in Stratford Road, off Bell Lane in Hendon.

“The victim was arriving at the car park, in order to travel to work for a night shift,” said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge, who is leading the investigation.

“He had just left his girlfriend and newborn baby at home in Edgware 15 minutes earlier. We believe he was attacked in the car park.”

It is thought the victim managed to drive away after the attack only to collide with a parked car in Parson Street minutes later.

Police, paramedics and the London Fire Brigade were called to the scene shortly after 9pm.

Officers said it was likely that people in the Belle Vue Estate in Hendon had witnessed the stabbing.

“I am appealing for anyone who saw the incident, or who knows anything about what happened, to make contact with my officers, all calls will be treated in the strictest confidence,” said DCI Partridge.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Sunday afternoon that there had been no arrests so far.

The victim’s family have been informed but he has not yet been formally identified.
