A man and woman who were stabbed to death in a bungalow in a "quiet" residential street were named by police today.

The bodies of Kenneth Snell, 65, and Karen Brown, 30, were discovered by officers in Brettingham Avenue, near Norwich, shortly after 9pm on Saturday night.

"A post-mortem examination revealed that both victims died from stab wounds," said a Norfolk Police spokeswoman.

The property was sealed off as detectives investigated.

The front door was covered by a green plastic sheet and a police tent was put up in the back garden.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of both murders in the early hours of Sunday morning and is being held in custody, a police spokeswoman said.

Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry, who is leading the inquiry, said: "It would appear that all the people involved in this incident were known to each other."

Retired Mr Snell, who lived in the bungalow, was called "jolly nice" by neighbours.

One 87-year-old male resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "The street is quite quiet really. Most people keep themselves to themselves but everybody is amicable.

"I saw Ken coming home some time with a woman in his car and I presumed it was his daughter.

"Nobody heard or saw anything really and suddenly the police were here.

"We can't figure out who called 999 to say that there were two bodies in there."

A 92-year-old female neighbour, who also declined to give her name, said: "He was a jolly nice man. It is a terrible tragedy."

Another resident heard "thumps" but dismissed the noise as Halloween fireworks.
