A 10-year-old girl who was left fighting for her life after she and her parents were involved in a car crash has died.

The girl was travelling in a Subaru on the A3020 Cowes Road in Newport, Isle of Wight, when it was in collision with a Ford Puma at about 8.30pm yesterday, Hampshire Constabulary said.

She was taken to Southampton General Hospital where she died earlier today.

Her 44-year-old father and mother, aged 41, both suffered life-threatening injuries and are being treated at St Mary's Hospital on the Isle of Wight, where they both remain in a serious condition, a police spokeswoman said.

The girl and her parents are from the local area, police said.

The driver of the Ford Puma, a 30-year-old man from Sandown, Isle of Wight, was arrested at the scene. He also suffered serious injuries and is receiving treatment at St Mary's Hospital, the spokeswoman added.

The road between Newport and Cowes was closed for several hours while officers from the roads policing unit carried out a detailed investigation of the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who saw either of the vehicles prior to the incident is asked to call 101 quoting Operation Oakwood, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
