A former Premier League footballer will stand trial today charged with assaulting his sister.

Ex-West Ham United defender Calum Davenport, 27, is accused of causing actual bodily harm to Cara Davenport, 28, on August 22 last year in an incident which later saw him stabbed in both legs.

Davenport denies the charge.

Ms Davenport's boyfriend, Worrell Whitehurst, pleaded guilty in November to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to the former England Under-21 international on August 22 last year.

He will be sentenced after the conclusion of Davenport's trial, which will be held at Luton Crown Court.

Davenport was left with a 15-inch scar on his leg after the attack and required surgery before he could return to training.

He is now a free agent, having left West Ham by mutual consent in March.
