A man accused of stabbing his three-year-old son to death has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police said today.

Paul Otieno, 31, has been charged with murdering his son Wilson and attempting to murder his wife Jacqueline, 28.

The alleged attack took place at the family's flat in Lynton Road, in Bermondsey, south east London, on 23 November.

Investigators believe Otieno launched a frenzied knife attack after his wife threatened to divorce him.

Police found the couple's 17-month-old baby daughter unharmed. Otieno tried to cut his own throat and wrists.

Police suspect the accused is a nephew of wanted flamboyant millionaire evangelist Gilbert Deya

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a 31-year-old man has been charged and detained under Section Two of the Mental Health Act.

He said: "A magistrates' court appearance will be postponed until a future date to be confirmed."

Kenyan prosecutors want to put Mr Deya on trial over claims that he abducted "miracle babies" and handed them to infertile followers in Britain.
