The family of a man who died after being detained under the Mental Health Act will continue to seek “justice” following an inquest into his death.
The sister of Kingsley Burrell said the door was open to a private prosecution after a coroner recorded a narrative verdict into his death on 31 March 2011. A jury at Birmingham Coroner’s Court ruled there were gross failures to get Mr Burrell proper medical attention, and that the use of force and placing of a cover over his head contributed to his death.
Mr Burrell, 29, a student from Winson Green in Birmingham, died at the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital four days after being detained by police.
He had dialled 999 claiming his life was under threat but was sectioned and taken to a mental health unit, then days later was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
His family heard senior coroner Louise Hunt read out the verdict after six weeks of evidence. Kadisha Brown-Burrell said her brother had been “mistreated from day one, from when he rang for help, until… life support was switched off”.
