A nurse was left in critical condition after her partner tied her to a bed and injected her with “controlled drugs” during an attempted “exorcism”, a court heard.

Kelly Wilson suffered organ failure after Dr Hossam Metwally tried to rid her body of “evil spirits”, magistrates in Grimsby, Lincolnshire were told.

The 31-year-old nurse had formerly worked for the same NHS trust as her partner, a British national, qualified in medicine in Egypt before coming to the UK.

The 58-year-old who worked as a pain clinic specialist and an anaesthetist at Princess Diana Hospital in Grimsby, Scunthorpe General Hospital and local clinics, also ran a business with Ms Wilson from their home in Grimsby.

Lincs Pain Clinic advertises as managing acute pain, chronic pain and sports injuries.

Dr Metwally is the director and Ms Wilson is listed as a co-director and the company secretary.

She was taken to Grimsby Hospital intensive care where safeguarding staff alerted Humberside Police the following day.

Officers carried out a three-day forensic operation in which bags of belongings and other material were recovered by crime scene investigators.

Police also placed an overnight guard at the home until the search was called off on Sunday.

Dr Metwally, a father of two sons, was arrested and appeared before Grimsby magistrates the following day, where he was accused of administering an unknown noxious substance to Ms Wilson and causing her grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent between 2 July and 5 July.

The court heard that he moved to Grimsby in 1999 after three years in Scotland, becoming “a senior member of staff in the department”. He met Ms Wilson in 2015.

An application for bail was refused and Dr Metwally, who did not enter any pleas, was remanded in custody to appear at Grimsby Crown Court on 5 August.

The magistrates were told Ms Wilson’s condition remained critical.

Dr Kate Wood, medical director at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I can confirm a member of staff at the trust has been charged with GBH and administering a noxious substance. He will be excluded from working at all trust premises. We will not be commenting further at this time.”
