A suspected gunman is on the run in Essex after he fled the scene of a burglary.

Essex Police were called to a break-in at a house in Wivenhoe on Tuesday night but the man managed to escpae.

A statement issued by the force said: "Officers attended and found a man who appeared to have a firearm."

Local residents reported hearing the sound of gunfire on social media, though this remains unconfirmed.

Users of a local online forum said they were told to stay inside and lock their doors.

HazelH wrote: "I have two friends who were told by police there was a report of an armed man and they should stay safe and lock doors.

"I heard two loud bangs about 40min ago from towards river but not sure if related."

Essex Police added: "An extensive area search has been completed by specialist officers but the man remains outstanding.

"Detectives are progressing a number of investigative opportunities to locate and arrest the man responsible."
