Five teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of an elderly man in north London.

Metropolitan police officers were called to a residential address in The Broadway by the London Ambulance Service yesterday evening at 7.30pm.

A 52-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene at around 8.30pm.

Officers believe the man, who was with an unidentified woman at the time of the attack, was verbally assaulted by a group of teenage boys aged between 13 and 14 as he attempted to enter his home.

Two of the group followed the man into the block and stabbed him.

Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock of the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "The victim and this group were not known to each other - what started as a minor verbal altercation has escalated into a shocking act of violence."

Det Insp Baldock said officers believe the group were attempting to break into the building when the man and woman appeared at the address. The boys remain in custody in a north London police station.

A fifth boy aged 13 years old was arrested this morning in Enfield borough, a police spokesperson confirmed this afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 0208 345 1570 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
