A five-times banned driver who killed a three-year-old when his lorry smashed into a family car was jailed for four years yesterday.

Michael Moden, 34, was branded "a coward" by Judge Michael Mettyear. He tried to flee the scene and initially denied any involvement.

Moden, from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, who pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was also banned from holding a licence for seven years.

At Hull Crown Court Judge Mettyear told him: "You have spent a good deal of your life ruining the lives of other people. You are a burglar, a thief, you have committed offences of violence and hold disrespect for the laws of the roads."

Moden admitted being on the wrong side of the road. He said he was distracted by a noise from the back of the skip lorry.

The 10-ton truck killed Sally Wilburn, 3. Her parents wept as the verdict was read out.
