Double killer stabbed to death 'in revenge attack'
A man aged 20 who was jailed for killing two friends in a car crash has been murdered in what may have been a revenge attack. Dwayne Ayres was stabbed to death in the village of Hook, Hampshire, after a group burst into the house where he was staying early yesterday morning.
Friends drove him to a hospital in Surrey but he was pronounced dead by doctors at 4am. Six people, all male, have been arrested in connection with his murder and three more, including one woman, were detained on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
In October 2007, Mr Ayres was jailed for two and a half years for causing the death of Callum Forbes, 15, and John Bryant, 18, by dangerous driving and he had only recently been released from prison. The court heard that he had taken cocaine and was driving at 66mph in a 40mph zone when he lost control of the car.
After Mr Ayres was sentenced, Diana Forbes, the mother of Callum, said: "I would very much like it known that I forgive Dwayne utterly and completely and from the bottom of my heart for his actions. I hope he will be able to forgive himself in time and turn his life around."
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said that two weeks ago the door of the house where Mr Ayres had been was staying had been kicked in. "It sounds as if someone was looking for Dwayne to settle a score, possibly over the deaths of the two boys," he said. "He had only just come out of prison after serving his sentence, and now this."
Another neighbour said that the dead man had been staying at the house, although he lived in Church Crook-ham, near Fleet. "I don't know if he was staying there in the hope that no one would find him after coming out of prison, but it seems likely," he said. The victim's friends drove him 13 miles to Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, instead of taking him to the hospital at Basingstoke, just six miles away.
Police described the killing as "an unusual and isolated event" yesterday but refused to speculate on the motive, saying that would be part of the inquiry.
