Fines for woman driving 100 miles to get a McDonalds and man who travelled 14 miles to play Pokemon
Nearly 45,000 fines issued to people across UK for breaching Covid laws
A woman has been fined after she drove 100 miles across three counties to get a burger and a man has also been issued a fixed penalty notice after travelling 12 miles to a neighbouring town to play Pokemon.
North Yorkshire Police issued the woman, who is in her 30s, with the notice on Saturday after she drove from Lincolnshire for a takeaway meal with her sister in Scarborough in breach of Covid-19 regulations.
Chief Inspector Rachel Wood of North Yorkshire Police said: "Driving through three counties to get a burger is not classed as essential travel.
"Most people in North Yorkshire are trying really hard to stop the spread of Covid in our communities and protect the vulnerable.
"When this pandemic is over, we know everyone's looking forward to going where they want, when they want."
Meanwhile, Warwickshire Police said the man travelled from his home in Bedworth to Kenilworth to play Pokemon on Monday.
Writing on the force Facebook page, PC Stephen Jones said: "Travelling from Bedworth to Kenilworth in the late evening to 'Pokemon Hunt' is not particularly local and it definitely isn't essential.
"I posted last night that we will engage and explain where we can but we will enforce blatant breaches of the lockdown and this is exactly what happened this evening.
"A £200.00 fine has been issued to an adult male.
"Please #StayHome."
On Tuesday, a senior police chief said nearly 45,000 fines have been issued to people across the UK for breaching Covid-19 laws.
National Police Chiefs' Council chairman (NPCC) Martin Hewitt also warned that officers will not "waste time" trying to reason with people who have "no regard" for the safety of others.
