The teenager charged with the murder of PC Dave Phillips appeared in court smiling and showing his handcuffs to the press.

Clayton Ronald Williams, 18, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, was pictured in the back of a security van as he arrived in Wirral Magistrates' Court.

Williams has been accused of stealing a Mitsubishi pickup truck during a burglary and driving it at the officer, killing him.

He has also been accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to PC Phillips' colleague, PC Thomas Birkett, who jumped out of the way.

A second man, Phillip Mark Stuart, 30, is charged with aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and burglary.

He is due in court this morning.

PC Phillips, 34, was killed in Wallasey after a burglary at a sales and letting agency in Birkenhead.

The police officer and his colleague PC Birkett carried out a 40-minute pursuit before deploying a "stinger" device to stop the Mitsubishi Challenger L200.

The vehicle then mounted a central reservation and hit the officer, before speeding away.

PC Birkett performed CPR on PC Phillips on the scene, but he died a short time later at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral.

On 7 October hundreds attended a candlelit vigil at New Brighton's Fort Perch Rock, Wirral.

Following PC Phillips' death, almost £70,000 has been raised for a memorial fund set up by the Merseyside Police Federation, which looks set to exceed its target of £100,000.

Williams kept his head down for most of the hearing.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday morning.
