Carjack murderer jailed for life

A teenager was given a life sentence yesterday for the murder of a man during an attempted carjacking.

Dwaine Williams, aged 18, stabbed Tim Robinson, 25, an estate agent, seven times, once through the heart, in the attack in Battersea, south London, in January. "It was a wicked crime to take that man's life without any excuse or justification," the Recorder of London, Judge Michael Hyam, told Williams at the Old Bailey. "It was the needless waste of a life which was full of promise. He was a man you did not know, who had done you no harm but whose car you wanted. He was taken entirely by surprise by your brutal attack. There was no shadow of excuse for it and the punishment is mandatory."

Williams, from Brixton, south London, had admitted murder. It is believed to be the first carjacking murder in Britain. An accomplice, Aaron Jones, 17, also from Brixton, who admitted carjacking, will be sentenced later. His plea of not guilty to murder was accepted by the prosecution.

The court was told that an "act of chivalry" by Mr Robinson cost him his life. He had insisted on driving to collect his girlfriend Jemma Joyce from the West End of London instead of letting her take a cab. He was attacked shortly after parking his Audi outside their home.

Mr Robinson's parents, Ken and Christine, were in court to see Williams sentenced.
