A murder investigation has been launched after two bodies were found in London.

Police said two women were found dead at a home in Canning Town after officers were called over “concerns for the welfare of an occupant”.

They have not yet been formally identified and the Metropolitan Police are working to trace next of kin.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Tucker said: “The launch of any murder investigation is naturally of concern to the local community and we have borough officers in the area supporting colleagues from the Homicide and Major Crime Command as they investigate the full circumstances.

“A crime scene is in place and we would encourage anyone with information about what may have happened at this premises to contact police.”

Officers found the bodies when they gained entry to the home in Vandome Close, following at call at 11.45am on Friday.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

It comes after homicides hit the highest number for a decade across England and Wales, where knife crime is at a record.

The Metropolitan Police’s latest crime statistics show there were 122 homicides in 2018-19, down from 163 in the previous 12 months.

Knife injuries have fell by almost 10 per cent to 4,277 recorded incidents and gun crime offences by 7 per cent.

As the figures were released on Thursday, Assistant Commissioner Mark Simmons said: “Tackling violent crime and knife crime on the streets of London has been and remains the top priority for the Met.

“We are working tirelessly – day and night – to identify and pursue offenders, help bring perpetrators to justice, take weapons off the street, support victims, engage and reassure the public, and keep our communities safe.

“As a result, there have been reductions in homicide and stabbings – horrific crimes that impact most on people’s lives.”
