A 15-year-old boy has died after being stabbed in the early hours of the morning.

The teenager was found with stab wounds at 2.20am on Saunday in Smethwick, just west of Birmingham city centre in the West Midlands.

He was taken to hospital by emergency services but died from his injuries.

Police say they have launched an investigation into the attack, which took place on Raglan Road.

A woman, who lived close to where the 15-year-old was stabbed, told the Birmingham Mail she had heard shouting and screams.

"I just thought it was people who had come out of the pub and may have had too much to drink.

"I was shocked to see the police outside my door in the morning.

"To find out a 15-year-old boy has been stabbed to death is just terrible, absolutely horrific."

Linton Woodstock, also a nearby resident, said the road had always been very peaceful until now.

"I can't recall any problems, certainly nothing like this," he told the Birmingham Mail.

"My heart goes out to the boy's family they must be devastated. I am in shock."

Detective Inspector Warren Hines, of West Midlands Police, said: "Enquiries are at an early stage and officers are looking at CCTV and taking witness statements.

"Forensic investigations are ongoing at the scene."

Raglan Road was cordoned off between a medical centre and The Puffing Billy pub, and a police tent has been erected, according to the Birmingham Mail.

"I would urge anyone who was around the Raglan Road area at the time please get in touch," said Detective Inspector Hines.

"If you have any information about what took place, please call me on 101".
